Steve Loves Bats

I have always loved bats. They are magnificent creatures; much maligned and feared. Bats actually are very gentle. Out of the roughly 950 known bat species, only THREE (all Vampire bats), drink blood. (Vampire bats do not live in North America, they are native to Central and South America.) Most bat myths are false, bats do not carry rabies any more than any other wild animal. They will not fly in your hair, anymore than any other wild animal will. Most others are also false.

These are pictures of Townsend's Big Eared bats (Corynorhinus townsendii). They are native to most of North America. This bat eats insects. Bats clear millions of pounds of insects out of our cites daily. I hope to travel to Texas to see Bracken cave which is owned and operated by Bat Conservation International. This cave is a protected home to millions of bats. Their nightly exit is said to take the colony several hours to complete. I would love to watch. I like to use the name BatJack; I take the first part of this from my love of bats. (The second part I take from my love of Black Jack!!)
